Boulder Startup Week has gotten off to a really great start. Giant kudos to Andrew Hyde, the BSW Team, and the rest of the startup community for making it happen.
This morning at Agora at the Riverside, they had a terrific lineup of speakers from the Boulder “Maker” community. One of the most interesting to me, as an optical engineer, was Jen Lewin, an artist who uses technology and light to create amazing things, like laser harps and gigantic robotic butterflies.
The next event I attended was a panel presentation about the extensive CU resources that are available to the local business community. The panel included representatives from the CU Boulder Office of Industry Collaboration, the Deming Center, Design Center Colorado, and Career Services. I will definitely be back in contact with them again soon.
We ended the day with a huge party at Absinthe House. I had a chance to catch up with old friends, make a few new ones, and….I got scanned at the Occipital Structure Sensor demo. We’re 3D printing just about everything these days, so why not people? Will I feel awkward having a mini-me figurine on my desk shelf? Nah.
I find it interesting that Occipital is making their sensor easily “hackable”, as a point of differentiation from their competition. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how companies can be profitable without protecting their IP, but being a DIY’er, I appreciate the generosity of the open source movement. Here’s a product development company that’s found a way to work it towards their advantage and I like that.
Looks like it’s going to be a fun week.
